Riley's Story

Hi my name is Riley Hoover I have been playing guitar since I was 9 years old. As a child I was mostly in to classic rock and metal bands such as Led Zeppelin and Metallica and always dreamed of being able to shred a guitar solo. Now I listen to a wider variety of music and am more influenced by guitar players such as Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Derek Trucks, Robben Ford and want to really express feeling through my guitar playing. Do I still like to shred?  Hell yeah but just at the right times. When I was 14 I joined an after school, performance based music program called the School of Rock. Within a year I clearly saw my guitar playing begin to excel in ways I thought weren’t possible mainly because of my awesome guitar teacher Tom Mitchell. I learned an extensive amount of theory, different musical styles and ultimately was awarded a spot with the elite house band. During this time I had many opportunities to help mentor the younger kids and was often learning on average 2 -3 new songs a week for the house band and performed all around north San Diego county. It was also at the School of Rock that I developed a massive passion for writing original music and have created and helped arrange over 20 songs. . Along with composing music I highly enjoy playing in front of a live audience and watching

the songs I have created come to life in the band that I am proud to be part of called Chasing Norman. Chasing Norman has played an enormous amount of gigs including the House of Blues, the Vans Warped Tour and many other top venues around the San Diego area. This past year we released a complete album of original songs called "Chief Gritts" and are actively working on our next album.

My dream of course would be to go on a world tour with Chasing Norman but I also know how important it is for me in the long run to continue formal education and training with one of the more prominent music schools if I am truly going to pursue a career in music. As preparation I am continuing to add to my knowledge of music theory, studying jazz and other genres and have been analyzing numerous songs out of the Real Book.
